Haryana Is All Set To Steel The Show In Pro Kabaddi League

With 93 days of action, the Pro Kabaddi League is all set starting from July 28 and concluded on 28 October with four new teams namely- Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana — are ready to set the mat on fire.

The latter has always been a profuse supplier of pro kabaddi players. The only missing cog in the wheel was a team from the State Haryana but Haryana Steelers are all set to alter that scenario.

Mohit Chillar is one of the big signings for Haryana Steelers With major reshuffling in squads taking place during the auctions of pro kabaddi league on May 22 and 23.

Mustafa Ghouse, CEO of JSW Sport, that owns the Haryana Steelers, said that the existing eight teams might have a little edge over new entrants. “They (the eight old teams) got to retain some of the best players. Although, most of the teams had to reshuffle their squads and probably they would also start from scratch,”

Asked about the reason behind picking Haryana as their PKL entry, Mustafa exclaimed, “We were very keen on Haryana because we thought the game is huge in that state.”

The team has work on its defence. The signings of the services of star defenders like Surender Nada for INR`5,15,000 and Mohit Chillar for INR 46,50,000 in the recently concluded auctions of pro kabaddi league, are testimony to that.

The owners of the team Haryana Steelers have also spend the money on raiders like Surjeet Singh(42,50,000) and Wazir Singh (44lakh). When queried about the much longer work schedule of the league, the JSW Sports CEO said, “Longer leagues are the way forward. It has to become commercially viable for all stakeholders. The potential of this business model can only be accurately analysed once we go deeper into the league.”

The pro kabaddi league will also have a different format from the last seasons. The teams are divided into two zones with each team set to play 22 games.
